Why Yale-NUS

Yale-NUS College is Asia’s leading liberal arts and sciences college. Our curriculum is designed to prepare you for the global challenges of the 21st century. The Yale-NUS liberal arts education will open the doors to myriad opportunities, ignite your passion for learning, and help you acquire the knowledge and skills you need to be a leader in your chosen field.

Navigate the tabs below to read about the three pillars of the Yale-NUS experience: our exceptional curriculum, experiential learning, and residential community.

Exceptional Curriculum

The curriculum at Yale-NUS is designed to ignite a passion for learning, and to allow students to flourish in virtually any field. We emphasise broad-based interdisciplinary learning, while building a common foundation among all students in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. During your academic journey, deepen your intellectual explorations through a chosen major and an optional minor.

The keystones of the Yale-NUS academic experience are:

  1. Common Curriculum
  2. Majors/Minors
  3. Electives

A Spotlight on the Common Curriculum

Is the Common Curriculum only for students who do not know what they want to do? Do your high school subjects limit you in this Curriculum? We get these questions all the time! Here are two videos to give you the inside scoop:

Associate Professor of Humanities (Literature) Mira Seo, Director of the Common Curriculum, shares about the diversity of the Common Curriculum texts and topics, and how it can benefit students of any background. In fact, the diversity and perspectives that students bring also contributes to the learning that happens in the classroom; not only for their peers, but for the faculty too.

Hear from three current students as they recount the surprises, challenges, and joys of having gone through the Common Curriculum to arrive at their chosen Major. All their intellectual journeys are incredibly unique, and the interdisciplinarity of the curriculum allows them to truly explore their interests and passions.

Experiential Opportunities

At Yale-NUS College, learning is not limited to the classroom! The College’s Centre for International and Professional Experience (CIPE) offers an enriching array of local and global opportunities, designed to enhance students’ academic learning. We provide the chance for students to broaden their perspectives and better understand different cultures and locales – abilities that are highly prized in this interconnected world.

Watch two exclusive videos about some of CIPE’s offerings!

Three pairs of Yale-NUS students share their different learning experiences outside of the classroom in this Couch Talk.

Here’s a sneak peek of what a Career Advising session may look like for students!

Find out more about CIPE through their website, here.

Residential Community

Yale-NUS College’s residential community is what makes the student experience truly unique.

During your four years at Yale-NUS, you will call one of three Residential Colleges (RC): Saga, Elm, or Cendana, home . At Yale-NUS, living on campus does not equate to a bed conveniently located near one’s classroom. RCs intentionally build close communities among students and residential faculty, make room for learning and collaboration outside the classroom, and support you in both your academic and personal growth.

On a typical evening in Yale-NUS you can easily find:

  • an academic talk or panel taking place,
  • athletes training for a competition,
  • a performing arts group rehearsing for its next show,
  • social-identity groups offering support spaces for the community,
  • writers working on their next articles for publishing,
  • or a group of friends up in a sky garden trying to coordinate a midnight birthday surprise for one of their suitemates!

In addition, all students go through the Yale-NUS Residential Curriculum, where they gain diverse perspectives, practise intercultural engagement, and learn the skills of self-care and care for others within a close-knit community.
