Hello! My name is Ryan Yoong Ka Jun and I come from the just-as-hot and just-as-humid country of Malaysia! My interests vary from sports to traveling to occasionally breaking out into a tune. I also thoroughly enjoy days that I can sleep in with absolutely no worries.
Why I Chose Yale-NUS
To be honest, Yale-NUS wasn’t one of the colleges that I had intended to apply for in my senior year. But, with some luck I stumbled upon it and was immediately sold! It had the style of education that I was looking for—one that would allow me to experiment with different majors before I actually had to specialise in one (gasp!). Many would think that since I live relatively nearer to Singapore than most international students that the experience of being “abroad” would be different but I beg to differ. I’ve met some of the most amazing individuals who have really shaped the community to be what it is today.
For me, it’s an international experience that’s sort of close to home—a kind of best of both worlds situation which I really enjoy.
What I Love Most About Yale-NUS
The opportunities, hands down. At Yale-NUS, the sheer amount of opportunities to try/be a part of something is unparalleled. Whether you’re already taking part in the community service scene, looking to find out what tchoukball really is or just wanting to jam with some friends, there’s always a way to get involved. Despite this upbeat environment, I also appreciate the fact that there are spaces to have your own time and to take breather and recollect yourself before getting back to all the fun.
Best Moment I’ve Had at Yale-NUS
Traveling to Surabaya, seeing the picturesque Mount Bromo and thinking that it looked very much like a fantastic desktop wallpaper. Late night walks, talks and snacks with friends. Sipping bubble tea in Taiwan while looking up at the Taipei 101. Random singing sessions. Suite decorations, early Secret Santa and birthday surprises.
Some of the memories off the top of my head that’ll likely be there for a long time to come.
Random Fact about Yale-NUS
There are amazing views from the Residential Colleges if you’re lucky enough to live on an upper floor! Amazing sunrises and sunsets await if you’re in during those times.
